Our Backyard Chickens

We recently added three little chicks to our family! Much to my delight, they're quite photogenic, and don't mind posing to have their picture taken.

From left to right, meet Gracie, Lola, and Poppy. With some love, care, and a little luck, we're hoping they'll provide our family with eggs {and a bit of entertainment!} in the months to come. The coop is being built as I write this, and their space mapped out in the back yard.

Backyard chicken-keeping is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds, so I'm sure some of you might have a snippet or two of knowledge {or a funny story?} to share with me. I'd love to hear about your experience with chicken keeping!

  1. I grew up with chickens and loved it. Checking the eggs = best part of the day. :) Congrats!

  2. Curious, since the average layer only lays consistently for about 2 yrs, diminishes dramatically thereafter and typically stops laying after about 5 - 6 yrs but can live 10 - 15 years, what do you plan to do with them when they quit laying?

  3. That's a great question! These little ladies have certainly become our pets--and part of the family--already, and I can't imagine a thing in the world that would change the way we feel about them. With a little luck, by that time, we'll have relocated to a home with much more room to roam than what we've currently got, and the ladies will be joined by some additional hens. Eggs or no, they're ours 'for keeps,' and will be well cared for, for their entire lifespan.
